A Cop and A Counselor: A Front-line Wellness Story

Jody Petzoldt is an LPC with Great Oak Counseling and works with local law enforcement, fire fighters and first responders. She has specialized training in trauma informed care and is dedicated to changing the landscape of mental health awareness in this population. Matt Cotner is a 17 year veteran in law enforcement. His own mental health journey has motivated Matt to share his story and experience for the purposes of improving mental health for those working in first responder careers. Together, Jody and Matt are addressing important issue related to first responder mental health with their experiences.
Program Summary:
Participants will hear a story of post trauma recovery from a 17 year law enforcement officer/detective and a first responder counselor. Be able to discuss with others and identify your own barriers to recovery. The presenters will teach about traumatic event reactions in the nervous system and recovery process after the event. The presenters will discuss natural regulation and identity signs of dysregulation, leading to post traumatic stress. Through storytelling and audience participation discussion, participants will list daily self care techniques for regulating nervous system on and off shifts. Participants will hear of several available resources for mental wellness and trauma recovery and how they have been utilized in the healing process. The learning objectives for attendees are:
